Management Development Institute (MDI)
The North Carolina Central University Management Development Institute (MDI) is an intensive course of instruction designed to educate, develop, nurture, and motivate incumbent and newly appointed University leaders. Eligible management employees are notified and invited to participate by OHR Training. The Institute engages and inspires our management network with an interactive six-week program of leadership topics, case studies, role plays, presentations, and discussions that foster and promote success in the workplace for management. The Office of Human Resources, in partnership with collegiate university constituents and collaborative community affiliates, facilitates the training.
MDI additionally teaches participants to lead, coach, and be an integral part of work teams that define roles, objectives, and responsibilities while building an efficient, effective, and highly motivated management network that engages Eagle excellence and enhances employee morale.
Cohorts are scheduled each semester in sessions of six and meet once per week on Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are prerequisites required in advance of MDI training. Contact OHR Training and Organizational Development at 919-530-5148 with your interest or program questions.
NCCU Listens Program
NCCU Listens is a training and organizational development program designed to solicit employee feedback regarding excellence in customer service. Employees are encouraged to "speak up" regarding experiences they have encountered that embody excellent customer service while working at the University. There are two ways one can participate in the program, online or by paper submission through the NCCU Listens comment drop boxes provided throughout the campus.
Per the NCCU Listens survey, a series of questions are provided to solicit employee responses relative to their encounter and the customer service they received.
Spotlight on Excellence in Customer Service Award
The “Spotlight on Excellence in Customer Service Award” recognizes employees who have demonstrated outstanding customer service by going the extra mile.
The award is determined based on established criteria received through the “NCCU Listens” feedback program. These submissions are received online and/or from “NCCU Listens” comment boxes located throughout campus. Training reviews and records all submissions to identify and select award recipients.
Please note that:
- Submissions must be received via NCCU Listens online or from hard-copy entries submitted via NCCU Listens comment drop boxes strategically located on campus.
- Recognition must be specific to “Excellence in Customer Service.” A detailed scenario demonstration that exemplifies the employee “going the extra mile” to yield positive results is required.
- The employee must have a demonstrated pattern of “Excellence in Customer Service.” A review of the number of compliments vs. complaints determines the final decision.
- Employees are eligible for the award once every 12 months.
View the NCCU Listens form for additional information regarding the campus feedback program and to submit online. If you have questions, contact Tammy Jones at 919-530-5148.

University Leadership Education and Development (ULEAD) Program
Leadership development in the university setting is a collaborative process. Participants learn from our world-renowned faculty, from outside experts, and from each other. They gain the practical insight, knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for leadership effectiveness, through classroom sessions, active assessments of leadership characteristics, and participation in an intensive, practical project that addresses a major campus issue. Then, they apply what they’ve learned in the real laboratory of the workplace – in the office the next morning.
