North Carolina Central University requires all admitted students to complete Level II of a modern foreign language. Students are required to complete the Modern Foreign Language placement test for Spanish (SPAN), French (FREN), or German (GERM). FREN 1192, GERM 1192, and SPAN 1192 satisfy the foreign language requirement of the General Education Curriculum (GEC).

How to Complete the Modern Foreign Language Placement Exam
Students can complete the placement test by logging into Emmersion. Create an account and then select the language you intend to pursue. You will be able to see your test score at the end of the exam outlining your level of placement. The placement test is free of cost to all NCCU students.
Note: The exam is crucial for course registration, so please complete your placement test prior to attending New Student Orientation.
Understanding Your Placement Test Scores
Students will be placed into their level of foreign language based on their exam scores. Students who take multiple foreign language exams should notify their academic advisor which foreign language they plan to pursue

Students who receive a 350+ on their exam score have placed out of the foreign language. Students who place out are no longer required to complete a modern foreign language course but have to fulfill the credit hours outlined in their elected major. |

Who Is Exempt from the Modern Foreign Language Placement Exam?
Students with college transfer credit, second degree-seeking students, prior credit in the language at NCCU from years past, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credit from another institution have already established a college language placement and are not required to take the placement test.
All official transcripts and test scores must be submitted to the Office of Transfer Services at [email protected] for final review and credit awarded of completed foreign language.

Transfer Students
Transfer students who earned an AA, AS, or AAS from any accredited U.S. college may instead satisfy the language requirement by completing a “culture” course (Fren 1000, 1020, or 3130; Germ 2010 or 2104; or Span 1000, 1020, 2010, 2020, or 2150).
International and ESL Students
For students who are proficient in a language other than English or English is their second language, proficiency will be determined by procedures certified by the Modern Foreign Language Department. To complete a proficiency test, please contact the Language and Literature Department by emailing John Prince at [email protected] to schedule a private test. A fee may be associated with the administered exam. For more information regarding the exam fee, please contact Mr. Prince.
International students who can submit proof that they completed TOEFL in order to study at an institution of higher learning in the United States have satisfied the foreign language requirement.
- TOEFL minimum score of 70 on the computer-based test and 550 on the paper-based test. Students who receive a score of 70 on the computer-based test and 550 on the paper-based test will place out of the Modern Foreign Language GEC requirement but must fulfill the credit hours outlined in their elected major.
- IELTS minimum score of 6.0. Students who receive a minimum score of 6.0 will place out of the Modern Foreign Language GEC requirement but must fulfill the credit hours outlined in their elected major.
