Overview
NC Central offers a flexible work policy (POL – 80.02.1) that is available to any full-time or part-time (half time or more), probationary, trainee, or time-limited employee. The only employees who are not eligible are temporary, intermittent, or part-time (less than half time) employees.
Telework is a work arrangement that allows an employee to perform work, during any part of regular, paid hours, at an approved alternative worksite; it is an important tool for achieving a resilient and results-oriented workforce. Flex schedules can take the form of flexible work hours, flexible work schedules, or flexible work locations.
Ultimately, managers are given the discretion to permit employees to telework or work a flexible schedule. Managers are encouraged to be as flexible as possible, but the decision to set and adjust is based on meeting the department’s operational needs and the employee’s performance.
Interested employees should approach their managers with a plan in place that includes the following:
- The benefits of the proposed schedule detailing how communication and customer needs will be met
- Areas of the proposed schedule that are priorities versus those that are flexible
- The manner in which University policies will be met, including time allocation, rules for University-owned equipment, purchasing and reimbursement rules, security rules, and other rules that apply to the effective execution of an employee’s duties.
