Considering the ongoing winter weather event affecting Durham and surrounding areas, the university will extend the current Condition 2 status (Suspended Operations) of the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy through Friday, Feb. 21, at 11:59 p.m. An update about Saturday’s operations will be shared on Friday afternoon. All non-essential campus operations are suspended during this period.

IAIER Seed Grant Program

The Seed Grant Program at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Equity Research (IAIER) is designed to support early-stage research projects, innovative ideas, and pilot initiatives that align with the institute’s mission of advancing artificial intelligence while promoting diversity, inclusion, and social equity.

The program will provide small, targeted funding to faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and students to jumpstart promising AI-related projects that have the potential for long-term impact. 

Program Objectives

  • Foster innovative AI research: Encourage exploratory research in cutting-edge AI technologies, applications, and methodologies. 
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration: Support projects integrating AI with other disciplines, including healthcare, education, law, and social justice. 
  • Increase diversity in AI research: Provide opportunities for underrepresented minorities in STEM, ensuring diverse voices and perspectives in AI development. 
  • Encourage external funding: Help seed grant recipients produce preliminary data and results that can strengthen future applications for larger grants from federal agencies, industry partners, or private foundations.
