IAIER Research Initiatives

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Equity Research (IAIER)’s research initiatives align with a mission to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and uplift underserved and marginalized communities. These initiatives are shaped by partnerships with NCCU's affiliated units, leveraging their unique expertise in the following key areas.

Research will explore the legal implications of AI systems, focusing on issues like fairness, accountability, and transparency. Projects will examine how AI can improve access to justice, particularly for individuals representing themselves in court, while ensuring that AI systems comply with legal and ethical standards. 

In collaboration with LAIER, IAIER will focus on how AI can be harnessed to address social justice and equity issues. The research will investigate how AI systems impact diversity and inclusion and aim to develop equitable AI models that reduce societal disparities. Key areas of focus include the ethical implications of AI, machine learning for social good, and AI’s role in mitigating bias in fields such as healthcare, education, and criminal justice. This initiative will also explore the creation of AI-driven solutions for real-time fault diagnosis in self-driving cars, virtual support systems for marginalized communities, and expanding STEM education for underrepresented groups. The partnership will ensure that AI research advances technological innovation and serves as a tool for promoting fairness and equity across various sectors. 

This initiative will address the intersection of AI and cybersecurity, developing AI-driven tools to combat cyber threats and ensure data security in digital environments. The research will emphasize creating AI systems that are both secure and ethical, protecting vulnerable communities from data breaches and cyberattacks. 

In collaboration with the Data Analytics program, the institute will develop AI models that process and analyze large datasets to inform decision-making in areas such as healthcare, education, and public policy. Research will prioritize reducing data bias and ensuring that AI systems benefit all communities, particularly those that have been historically underserved. 

The institute will collaborate with BRITE to explore the use of AI in drug discovery, precision medicine, and optimizing biomanufacturing processes. Research will focus on using AI to address health disparities and improve healthcare outcomes for marginalized populations, particularly in disease prevention and treatment. 

This initiative will focus on developing AI-powered assistive technologies that enhance the quality of life for individuals with visual impairments. Research will seek to create adaptive AI systems that help individuals overcome daily challenges, promoting greater accessibility and independence. 

These research initiatives at the IAIER are designed to push the boundaries of AI innovation while prioritizing ethical considerations and serving the public good, particularly for underrepresented groups. The institute’s commitment to addressing real-world problems through AI will position NCCU as a leader in responsible and impactful AI research.
