The Civic Engagement Working Group (CEWG) at NCCU is a student-led initiative formed in 2020 as a collaboration supported by faculty, staff, alumni, and community. The group presented their unique collaboration at a national conference, the Gulf South Summit, to highlight the inclusion of alumni engagement in the day-to-day work of the group. The CEWG Ambassador program was birthed out of this initiative and continues to have new leaders emerge.

This year, North Carolina Central University received the Bronze Campus Seal for achieving a 20%–29% voter participation rate in the 2022 midterm elections.
All In Campus Democracy Challenge is a national award program established in 2016, following the 2012 call on the U.S. to reclaim higher education’s civic mission by the National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement, in A Crucible Moment to make civic learning and engagement more pervasive on college campuses. More than 1,000 campuses across the U.S. have joined the ALL IN Challenge. ALL IN has awarded campuses for excellence in nonpartisan student democratic engagement efforts by reviewing and analyzing the data of previous election cycles.
Highest Registration Rate at an HBCU
In 2024, NCCU was also awarded the Highest Registration Rate at an HBCU.
All IN also presents the Best In Class award based upon institutional characteristics. Within each category awards are presented to the campus with the highest voter registration rate, highest voting rate and the most improved voting rate. Most improved voting rates are a comparison of presidential to presidential elections, and midterm to midterm elections.
North Carolina Central University is one of 192 campuses that has earned this recognition so far for the 2024 election cycle.
North Carolina Central University has earned ALL IN's Highly Established Action Plan Seal for the 2024 election cycle for developing a nonpartisan democratic engagement action plan that received at least 31.5 of 36 possible points based on the Strengthening American Democracy Action Planning Guide (SADG) Rubric.
North Carolina Central University earned a Voter Friendly Campus designation as of 2023–2024. The Voter Friendly Campus designation program was started through a partnership between the Fair Elections Center’s Campus Vote Project and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA)’s NASPA LEAD Initiative in 2016.
This partnership was formed as a tool to support higher education institutions fulfilling the requirements of the Higher Education Act of 1965, which necessitates that institutions distribute voter registration forms to their students. Due to the lack of instructions and guidance regarding this requirement, the Voter Friendly Campus designation process was developed in an effort to further the work of the "Students Learn Students Vote" coalition in creating more measurable and manageable guidelines for institutions to follow in order to create a more voter-friendly campus.
