Stacie Phillips, a second-year social work graduate student, will spend the next year addressing the social factors that impact health and honing her leadership skills as an Albert Schweitzer Fellow.

Phillips will work for the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault in Raleigh, N.C., to raise awareness on NCCU’s campus about sexual violence and prevention, as well as launch a support group for of sexual assault survivors.

The Pittsburgh, Pa., native seeks to educate students through honest conversations and events to invoke awareness and further educate on sexual assault.

NCCU has equipped me with the confidence to pursue any opportunity such as the Schweitzer Fellowship, the university provides a vast amount of opportunities for students which is great exposure outside the classroom.

Schweitzer Fellows are charged with developing and implementing service projects that address health disparities in under-resourced communities while also fulfilling academic responsibilities. Each project is undertaken in collaboration with a community-based health and/or social service organization.

“The Schweitzer Fellowship will allow me produce a passion project that I didn’t imagine developing for at least another 10 years,” Phillips added.

Nearly 425 Schweitzer Fellows have provided more than 59,000 hours of service to North Carolina’s most vulnerable communities since 1940, when it was founded to carry on the legacy of famed physician Dr. Albert Schweitzer.

“This initiative is important because it will provide safe and brave spaces that allow individuals to find their own path toward healing and also combat fear,” she adds.

The North Carolina Schweitzer Fellows are among fellows working at 14 program sites around the United States, as well as one in Lambaréné, in Gabon, the former French Equatorial Africa.
