North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) Department of Nursing is integrating additional technology into its program with the launch of the Promoting, Unity in Learning, Systems and Education (PULSE) Apple Initiative. As part of this effort, all admitted nursing students will receive an iPad to support their classroom learning, homework assignments, laboratory activities and clinical practice.

The devices will provide access to essential resources, streamline communication with faculty and peers and improve clinical documentation – helping students develop critical skills for a rapidly-evolving healthcare industry.

The initiative is made possible through the University of North Carolina System’s Workforce Expansion Grant, ensuring that every nursing student has access to advanced digital tools throughout their education. Students will keep their iPads after graduation, reinforcing their professional development as they enter the workforce.

“Nurses are at the forefront of healthcare, and it is essential that we equip our students with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world,” said Yolanda VanRiel, Ph.D., chair of the nursing department. “The PULSE initiative is not only about enhancing classroom learning but also empowering our students to develop critical skills they will need in their careers, especially as healthcare becomes more technology driven.”

Faculty will also use iPads to facilitate interactive instruction, increase student engagement and promote a collaborative learning environment – bridging the gap between traditional nursing education and modern technology.
