North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has been named a FirstGen Forward Network Champion, a prestigious national designation recognizing higher education institutions dedicated to student success.

The FirstGen Forward Network, formerly the Center for First-generation Student Success, selected 18 new institutions for this honor, highlighting their leadership in creating welcoming educational environments and implementing proven strategies to support first-generation scholars.

At NCCU, nearly 40% of students are the first in their families to attend college.

“At North Carolina Central University, we are honored to be recognized as a FirstGen Forward Network Champion,” said Dekendrick Murray, executive director of student access and success programs. “This distinction reflects the dedication of our Department of Student Access and Success Programs and First-Generation Student Advisory Committee in supporting first-generation students. We remain committed to fostering a culture of access, belonging and academic excellence to ensure their success. As the first and only HBCU to receive this designation, we look forward to championing first-generation student success nationally and continuing to improve our programs and services.”

The FirstGen Forward Network follows a three-phase model—Network Member, Network Leader and Network Champion—designed to help colleges and universities transform the first-generation student experience. Network Champions have demonstrated long-term commitment and integrated first-generation initiatives in their institutional priorities.

“With 54% of current undergraduate students identifying as first-generation, achieving unprecedented FirstGen student success will have a life-changing impact across generations,” said Maurice Jones, CEO of FirstGen Forward. “To be named a Network Champion is an honor and a testament to the work of these institutions. They are national leaders in this area and will serve as role models for the field for years to come.”

As a Network Champion, NCCU will continue to expand initiatives that support first-generation Eagles through academic resources, mentorship programs and career development opportunities.
