North Carolina Central University's Department of Theater shone brightly at the 2024 National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts Conference (NADSA), held April 1-6 at Jackson State University.
NCCU's talented performers swept the competition, claiming first place in five categories: monologue acting, reader's theatre, set design, prose and persuasive speech. The department further cemented its reputation for theatrical brilliance by securing second place honors in one act play, playwriting and light design competitions.
"These awards represent the incredible dedication and artistic vision of our students," said Asabi (Stephanie Howard, Ph.D.), department chair. "Their commitment to excellence has put NCCU Theatre in the national spotlight."
The conference provided professional development opportunities for participating theatre majors Tiana Bailey, Kyla Brown, Kelyse Carpenter, Shahim Faircloth, Samya Howard, Marlie Howie, Hallel Jackson, Taryn Melvin, Malachi Moore and James Steward, under the guidance of directors Asabi and Nadia Bodie, Ph.D.
NADSA, founded in 1936, immerses participants in real-world professional standards through internships, apprenticeships and hands-on activities.
"What makes NADSA truly special is that students don't just observe—they actively participate and receive constructive feedback from industry professionals," said Bodie.
