Dixon is first woman to lead two UNC System institutions
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will officially install Karrie G. Dixon, Ed.D., as its 13th chancellor on Friday, April 11, at 9 a.m., in McDougald-McLendon Arena, 700 E. Lawson St.
During the ceremony, Chancellor Dixon will take the oath of office and receive the University Medallion. University of North Carolina System President Peter Hans will preside over the event. Following Dixon’s address, a reception will take place at Brant Street Plaza.
The celebration continues that evening with the Soaring to New Heights: Elevating, Empowering and Embracing Our Legacy Scholarship Gala at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel Raleigh-Durham Airport, 4700 Emperor Blvd., in Durham. The black-tie event begins at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 per person, and the purchase deadline is Wednesday, March 19. Proceeds from the event will support current and future Eagles.
Dixon was named chancellor of NCCU on June 6, 2024, following her nomination by President Hans and election by the UNC Board of Governors. She began her appointment on July 1, 2024, becoming the first woman to hold the position of permanent chancellor at two UNC System institutions.
Since taking office, Chancellor Dixon has led NCCU to record-breaking achievements, including the highest percentage increase in enrollment in the UNC System for the second consecutive year, driven by growth in online learning through Project Kitty Hawk and an increase in veteran student enrollment. Under her leadership, NCCU also became the first historically Black university in the nation to establish an AI institute, funded by Google.org.
