North Carolina Central University will host its virtual 136th Commencement Ceremony at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020, on the university’s website and Facebook page and YouTube channel. The university will award degrees to approximately 642 graduates of the university’s doctorate, juris doctor, master’s, professional and bachelor’s programs.
Five graduates of the NCCU School of Law will receive their juris doctor degrees. Approximately 202 master’s degrees will be awarded in areas of science, arts, public administration, library science, business administration, teaching and school administration.
Ariel Williams, a Greensboro, N.C., native, will be awarded a doctorate in integrated biosciences. She holds a bachelor’s in biology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a master’s in biology from North Carolina A&T State University. Her dissertation is entitled “Novel Interleukins Contribute to Lipid and Glucose Dysregulation in African Americans with Type 2 Diabetes.”
An estimated 434 bachelor’s degrees will be awarded, including 261 Bachelor of Science degrees; 65 Bachelor of Arts degrees; 46 Bachelor of Business Administration degrees; 34 Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees; 26 Bachelor of Social Work degrees; and two Bachelor of Music degrees.
Included in the graduating class is George Price, a nursing major and transfer student who during the coronavirus pandemic, worked at the University of North Carolina Medical Center in its medical/surgical unit as part of the capstone experience course required by his degree.
Price, a United States Army veteran, previously served as a medic and licensed practical nurse in the military. The Hampton, Va., native also served as NCCU’s Food Lion MVP Student Ambassador, leading NCCU’s team to win the contest that supports hunger-related initiatives such as campus-based food pantries, campus or community gardens, food recovery efforts.
