Posted October 20, 2023, 12:15PM

Dear NCCU Family:

It is with great sorrow that I inform you of a Fallen Eagle, our friend and colleague in the Department of Language and Literature, Dr. Claudia Becker, Professor of German, on Monday, Oct. 16, 2023, after a protracted illness.

Dr. Becker arrived at NCCU in 2007 as Associate Professor of German in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and earned tenure with promotion to Full Professor in 2011. She assisted in the merger of Modern Foreign Languages and English to form the Department of Language and Literature in 2012. She taught Elementary German, Intermediate German and Global Studies. Many of her students were student-athletes and she developed a strong rapport with her students and the administrators of the Athletics department. She participated in recruitment activities and the annual International Festival on campus.

Her laugh and loquaciousness will be missed. Her energy was infectious, and she exuded a zest for life.

As we cope with this difficult loss, please know that the university has resources for you to utilize as needed. Students who would like to speak with a counselor may call the NCCU Counseling Center’s 24-hour line at 919-530-7646. Faculty and staff may utilize the ComPsych guidance resources on the university’s HR page.

Additional information regarding Dr. Becker’s funeral services will be shared with the campus community when made available.

Please keep Dr. Claudia Becker’s family, friends, students and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.

In Truth and Service,

Johnson O. Akinleye, Ph.D.

Chancellor
