North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. James Leach as the new director of Campus Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) within the Division of Student Affairs (DSA). With more than a decade of experience in student affairs, recreation, and wellness administration, Leach brings a strong background in strategic planning, risk management, budgeting, and program development to this leadership role.
Leach has been an integral part of NCCU’s Recreation and Wellness team, most recently serving as interim director of campus recreation and wellness and associate director. In these roles, he supervised key personnel, managed operating budgets, and spearheaded initiatives that enhanced student engagement, facility operations, and recreational programming. His leadership in securing partnerships, such as hosting Sprint 8 certification training at no cost to HBCU participants, and his feature in Athletic Business Magazine, showcases his commitment to innovation and excellence in campus recreation.
Prior to his work in campus recreation, Leach served in various leadership positions within NCCU’s Department of Residential Life, including executive director and associate director. During this time, he managed a housing inventory of nearly 3,000 beds, oversaw multimillion-dollar budgets, and played a key role in the opening of new residence halls and the implementation of the Live-On Residency Policy. His expertise in operations management, student engagement, and strategic planning has made a significant impact on the student experience at NCCU.
Leach earned his doctoral degree from Maryville University in higher education leadership, a master’s degree from North Carolina State University in student affairs and counseling, an associate degree from Central Carolina Community College, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is an active member of the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), demonstrating his commitment to professional development and student success.
As the director of RecWell, Leach will lead the department in expanding recreational programs, enhancing student health and wellness initiatives, and ensuring the efficient management of facilities and resources. His vision will play a crucial role in fostering an environment that promotes student engagement, healthy lifestyles, and overall well-being.
