Grand Opening of the Academic Success Center: A New Era of Excellence

Posted January 14, 2025, 3:37PM

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will celebrate a significant milestone with the opening of the Academic Success Center (ASC), an innovative facility designed to enhance student learning and achievement. Located in Room 128 in the Farrison-Newton Communications Building at 501 E. Lawson St., the ASC will serve as the new hub for academic support. The event will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The creation of the ASC was inspired by the university's mission to promote student retention and achievement.

“The ASC is designed not only to help students master course content, but also to build self-efficacy by teaching essential study skills and strategies,” said Teah Smith, director of tutoring and supplemental instruction. “Our goal is to empower students to take ownership of their learning and to see academic support as a proactive step toward success.”

Innovative Services and Resources

The ASC builds upon the university’s existing tutoring services while introducing new features to meet an array of needs, including:

  • Collaborative Study Spaces: Areas designed for group work, exam preparation and peer collaboration.

  • Peer Tutoring: Personalized subject-specific support to help students excel in their courses.

  • Language Learning Lab: A new space equipped with personalized tutoring and technology to assist students in learning new languages and improving their proficiency.

  • ‘TSI Tools’ Tuesday & Thursday Workshops: Biweekly sessions during the 10:40 break will address common academic challenges, such as time management and study strategies.

The first workshops in the ‘TSI Tools’ series are scheduled for Feb. 4 and Feb. 6 and will focus on building effective study habits and improving time management skills.

Engaging the Campus Community

The ASC is designed to benefit not only students, but also faculty and staff. The center provides resources and training to enhance teaching practices that improve student outcomes.

“We want students, faculty and staff to see the Academic Success Center as a place of growth and connection,” Smith said. “By working together, we can create an environment that promotes lifelong learning and continuous improvement.”

The ASC will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
