Dr. Gordon Ibeanu Named Interim Director, BRITE

Dr. Gordon Ibeanu has been named interim director of North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise (BRITE), effective August 1, 2023. He will report to Deepak Kumar, Ph.D., interim associate provost and dean of research and sponsored programs.

Ibeanu joined NCCU in 2006 as a tenured faculty member in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He was an invaluable member of the team that established the BRITE program and, subsequently, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Ibeanu has served on several university committees, including the University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, now known as the University Undergraduate Council, since 2007. His current research focuses on translational research in neurodegenerative disease, with a special emphasis on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disorders.

Prior to joining NCCU, Ibeanu worked as a U.S. Department of Energy Alexander Hollander Distinguished Fellow in the Biology Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Oak Ridge, Tennessee; senior fellow at the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; senior scientist at AviGenics Inc., Athens, Georgia; senior biochemist at Sphinx Pharmaceuticals (a division of Eli Lilly and Company), Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; and Senior Research Scientist at Eli Lilly and Company, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Ibeanu currently serves as chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and will continue in this role. He is passionate about teaching and making a positive impact in the education of students and continues to teach several undergraduate and graduate courses. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Alabama, a master’s degree from Virginia State University and a Ph.D. from Atlanta University.
