NCCU Community,

I write to you with a heavy heart regarding the tragic shooting incident that unfolded on Sunday, April 27, at our sister institution, Elizabeth City State University (ECSU).  It is with great sorrow that I share the news of one non-student who lost their life, while several others, including ECSU students, sustained injuries.  The investigation is ongoing, and our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone affected.

On behalf of NCCU, I extend heartfelt condolences and unwavering support to the ECSU community during this deeply challenging time.  We have been in close contact with ECSU staff, offering our assistance as they begin the recovery process.

I also want to take this opportunity to remind everyone to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings.  If you notice anything suspicious or concerning, please contact campus police immediately.   In moments like this, it is essential to remember the strength we find in community, knowing that together, we can help maintain a safe and supportive environment for all.

For those experiencing distress or grief related to this situation, please know that the university has resources available to help you if you need them. Counselors are available to students on a drop-in basis (no appointment required) at the NCCU Counseling Center, Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Students may also call the NCCU Counseling Center’s 24-hour line at 919-530-7646. Faculty and staff may utilize the ComPsych guidance resources on the university’s HR page.

Thank you for your compassion and solidarity during this difficult time.

In Truth & Service,

Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon
