Please join us for the presentation "On Themes of Homage and Signification in Selected Works by Black American Composers."
The presentation will feature Dr. Horace Maxile (Baylor University) and is sponsored by the Neville Endowment at NCCU.
This lecture will be presented in Room 202, Music Building, NCCU, at 4 p.m. on Thursday, 30 March.
Perspectives involving history, culture and aesthetic choices will converge in an exploration into sources that shape the expressive trajectories of selected works by Black American composers. Brief introductions to each composer will include their own viewpoints as recorded in interviews and writings and will serve as points of entry for interpretive stances regarding their works. While not intentioned to posit the expressive voices of Black American composers as a monolith, Dr. Maxile does seek to situate Floyd’s concept of musical "Signifyin(g)" as one that forges a foundation toward discourses on a Black compositional legacy.
