This talk centers the music of Black American women by prompting students to listen to, imagine, and learn to hear Black women’s music.
We will consult the music scholarship of Black women theorists and musicologists, such as Samantha Ege and Daphne Brooks, as well as the feminist/womanist writings of Alice Walker and Mikki Kendall, to examine what Black women theorists of sound reveal about the music making of their ancestors. Through the analysis of a spiritual by Florence Price for Marian Anderson, we will explore collaboration between Black women musicians, taking careful note of what is gained and what is exchanged.
Admission is free.
