Kwame Hawkins
Professor Kwame Hawkins is an accomplished associate professor in the Department of Art and Design at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). With a focus on animation, character design, and game development, Professor Hawkins has been with NCCU since 2017, where he plays a key role in both teaching and curriculum development. He holds an M.F.A. in Computer Art from Savannah College of Art and Design, and a B.Sc. in Technology Education with a minor in Graphic Communications from North Carolina State University. His expertise spans a wide range of digital media disciplines, including 3D modeling, rigging, shader development, and interactive media.
Professor Hawkins’ research interests center on the intersection of emergent media, game design, and pedagogy. He is particularly focused on how game design methodologies can be applied to support individuals with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. His ongoing research includes the development of virtual reality (VR) teaching tools and video games that aim to enhance learning experiences by leveraging gamification strategies. His goal is to create accessible tools that help children and students build coping mechanisms and engage with educational content in new and innovative ways.
In addition to his academic research, Professor Hawkins has been involved in numerous collaborative projects. Notably, he has partnered with Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology on animations addressing noise pollution, equity, and inclusion. He also actively engages in creative works, with his art showcased in prestigious venues like the Luxembourg Art Prize. His animations and short films have received recognition in various competitions and screenings.
As a dedicated educator, Professor Hawkins teaches a wide range of courses, including Typography, Introduction to Game Development, and 3D Modeling. He has also been instrumental in developing NCCU's Animation and Interactive Media (AIM) concentration, where he has created and refined multiple courses, such as Rigging I and System Mechanics. His innovative approach to curriculum development ensures that students are well-prepared for the rapidly evolving fields of animation and game design.
Beyond the classroom, Professor Hawkins is an active participant in university service. He has chaired several faculty search committees, served as a faculty senator, and worked as the assessment coordinator for the Department of Art and Design. His commitment to enhancing the academic environment at NCCU is evident in his involvement in initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration between departments and supporting student success through internships and mentorship.
