Thank you for your interest in the graduate degree programs offered by the School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS).  I welcome you to be a part of our student family!  

Our students’ legacy rests on the rich history of NCCU and our program.  In 1939, NCCU offered its first graduate-level courses in library science.  In 1974, SLIS became the first HBCU with an accredited program in library and information sciences.  With over 1,400 degrees granted since 1939, we are the largest producers of African American librarians and information professionals in the country.  

We offer a Master of Library Science (MLS), as well as a Master of Information Science (MIS), with various concentrations to satisfy your personal and professional interests.  

Our MLS program is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of the American Library Association (ALA), the oldest and largest library association in the world. The ALA provides leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship, in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all. We take that aim to heart in our MLS curriculum.

Our MIS program is based on the MSIS model curriculum recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery and the Association for Information Systems.

With an SLIS degree, you will be equipped to join one of the nation's approximately 120,000 libraries or 35,000 museums and related organizations. You can then encourage their growth as open centers of innovation and entrepreneurship, working to share resources and knowledge through hands-on tinkering and discovery. 

In the private and public sector, you can use an SLIS degree to advance the work of intelligently and ethically infusing technology and data into our lives.
