Josephine L Harris
Dr. Josephine Harris is a clinical assistant professor in the Curriculum and Instruction Department at the School of Education. In this role, her job responsibilities include teaching courses in literacy and directed middle/elementary grades teaching and advising education majors. She also works with the Master of School Administration Program and the Teacher Assistant to Teacher Program (TA2TP).
In addition to a BA in English from Livingstone College, she holds a Master of Education degree from UNC-Charlotte; a Master of Divinity degree from Shaw University Divinity School; certifications in Reading Education (UNC-Chapel Hill/UNC-Charlotte), Curriculum and Instruction (UNC-Charlotte), Clinical Supervision (UNC-Charlotte); and Educational Leadership (UNC-Charlotte); and a doctorate (Virginia Union University's Samuel D. Proctor School of Theology).
Starting her teaching profession with the North Star Borough School District in Fairbanks, Alaska, she has held the following positions as an educator over the years: (1) elementary teacher, junior high teacher, high school teacher, reading/math diagnostician, instructional supervisor in Richmond County School System; (2) chapter I helping teacher/coordinator, assistant principal, and director of instruction in the Orange County Schools; (3) director of instruction and staff development and director of special programs in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System; (4) adult basic education teacher for Durham Technical Community College and Fayetteville Technical Community College in reading, math, and science; and (5) adjunct professor for the Schools of Education at UNC-Charlotte and North Carolina Central University. She started at North Carolina Central University as an adjunct professor in January 1992. Currently, she is a clinical assistant professor at North Carolina Central University.
Research
Dr. Harris's research interests include the following:
- Literacy development of children of multiple births (in particular, twins)
- Induction models for Education majors in IHE (going from "I want to be a teacher" to "I am a teacher")
