Darlene M Eberhardt-Burke
Dr. Darlene M. Eberhardt-Burke is a distinguished academic leader currently serving as the interim associate dean of the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). She is also the program coordinator for the Fashion, Apparel and Textile Design Studies program within the NCCU Department of Art and Design.
With a robust background in textiles, chemistry, and quality analysis, Dr. Eberhardt-Burke has played a pivotal role in shaping academic policies and fostering student success throughout her career. Her academic journey began with a Ph.D. in Clothing and Textiles, with a minor in Chemistry, from Virginia Tech, where her research focused on antibacterial and laundering properties of textiles used in healthcare. This foundation has positioned her as an expert in her field, particularly in textile science, fashion merchandising, and antimicrobial testing.
Before her role as interim dean, Dr. Eberhardt-Burke served in various leadership positions at NCCU, including chair of the Department of Human Sciences and director of Graduate Studies. In these roles, she demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence and program development. Her responsibilities included curriculum design, faculty management, and strategic planning. Dr. Eberhardt-Burke’s leadership significantly impacted the department, growing its programs and supporting both undergraduate and graduate students in their academic and professional pursuits.
As a dedicated educator, Dr. Eberhardt-Burke has taught a wide range of courses in textiles, apparel, and family and consumer sciences. Her teaching portfolio spans undergraduate and graduate levels, including courses such as Consumer Textiles, Fashion Buying, and Advanced Research Methods in Textiles and Apparel. She is also known for her mentorship, guiding graduate students through research projects and thesis work, as well as helping them navigate their academic and professional development. Dr. Eberhardt-Burke has won several awards such as the 2023 Board of Governors for Excellence in Teaching. She has also won the NCCU Excellence in Teaching Award and Faculty Student Advocate of the Year.
Dr. Eberhardt-Burke’s research interests are diverse, encompassing topics like African American dress, apparel management, and protective clothing for healthcare workers. Her work has earned recognition and funding through multiple grants, including the prestigious Cotton in the Curriculum Grant and the ICON 360/The GAP-Closing the Gap Grant. She has also contributed to several academic publications, addressing critical issues in clothing trends and textile innovations. These accomplishments highlight her contributions to advancing knowledge in both academic and practical applications of textile science.
In addition to her academic and research contributions, Dr. Eberhardt-Burke is actively involved in community service. She has served on the Board of Directors for Genesis Home in Durham, NC, and held leadership roles in various community organizations. Her commitment to outreach extends beyond the university, where she mentors young students and coaches youth sports, fostering leadership and teamwork skills.
