Calleen Herbert
Calleen Herbert is a distinguished leader, currently serving as the NCCU director for the Office of Community Engagement and Service (OCES). With a career spanning nearly four decades across the public, private, and non-profit sectors, she brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role.
During her NCCU tenure, Calleen has demonstrated her commitment to fostering meaningful community relationships and driving impactful initiatives. She notably chaired the 2024 OCES Strategic Planning committee, steering the university towards its strategic community engagement goals. Additionally, since 2015 she has been instrumental in the City of Durham’s Continuum of Care Homeless Services Advisory Committee, showcasing her dedication to addressing critical societal issues.
Calleen's leadership extends beyond the confines of NCCU, as evidenced by her statewide and national involvement. She has served as a Community Engagement Fellow at Western Washington University, a role she undertook with distinction in 2018 and from 2020 to 2022. Furthermore, her contributions as a reviewer for the American Council on Education (ACE) 2026 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement Application Revision Committee underscores her influence in shaping the national discourse on community engagement in higher education.
Notably, Calleen's efforts have been pivotal in securing the prestigious Carnegie Community Engagement Classification (2024–2032), an achievement that highlights the university's commitment to community-centered initiatives. Her NCCU representation on the Upper Coastal Plain Learning Council since 2015 further cements her position as a key influencer in regional educational collaborations.
Calleen holds a Master of Science in Public Management and Policy from Carnegie-Mellon University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science from Mississippi State University. Her academic background, coupled with her extensive professional experience, positions her as a formidable advocate for community service and engagement both national and international platforms.
