Being a Graduate Hall Coordinator

Under the supervision of an area coordinator, the graduate hall coordinator (GHC) manages the day-to-day operations of a residence hall and creates a safe and supportive community conducive to learning. The GHC is responsible for creating developmental opportunities for students and providing supervision of resident assistants and desk attendants assigned to the residence hall. Significant evening and weekend work is required.

The graduate hall coordinator manages the day-to-day operations of a residence hall and creates a safe and supportive community conducive to learning that aligns with Residential Life policies, University regulations, Association of College and University Housing Officers–International standards, and Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education standards.

General Responsibilities

• Serves as a resource to resident assistants (RAs) and desk assistants
• Attends departmental meetings and participates in departmental events
• Serves on at least one assigned committee or project each semester (for example, Recruitment and Selection; Training and Professional Development; Student Leadership and Programming)
• Reports student issues through the appropriate channels in a timely manner
• Participates in a rotating weekly duty rotation responding to after-hour issues, concerns, and emergencies
• Serves as a Responsible Employee, in compliance with Title IX, and a Campus Security Authority, in compliance with the Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act, to ensure that any incidents or crimes of violence are properly communicated in a timely manner.
• Assists with major department events and functions such as RA training, student-employee selection processes, room selection and departmental programming
• Utilizes technology including, but not limited to, Maxient, Microsoft Outlook, Asset Essentials, and Mercury

Graduate hall coordinators will receive a monthly stipend of $1,500 and a fully furnished apartment with a washer and dryer located within the unit.

• Graduate hall coordinators are expected to hold 20 office hours per week to complete administrative tasks and assignments.
• Additional hours are required when serving in the weekly on-call rotation. Evening and weekend work will be required.

• Must be enrolled for a minimum of 9 credit hours and must not exceed 12 credit hours of graduate study each fall and spring semester at a University of North Carolina System college or university.
• This is a live-in position, and graduate hall coordinators are expected to reside in their assigned apartments.
• Graduate hall coordinators must maintain a minimum semester grade point average of 3.0.

• This is a 10-month appointment.
• Graduate hall coordinators are required to remain on campus during the usual academic break periods and holidays (Labor Day, Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, MLK Holiday and Spring Break) if they are scheduled to be on call during those times.
• Annual reappointments are offered based on successful fulfillment of expectations, evaluation, academic performance and continued enrollment in a graduate program.
• Summer employment may be available (contingent upon staffing needs), with high priority given to current staff.
