Mathematics Faculty: Research and Scholarly Activities

The foundational areas of algebra and analysis provide core knowledge for the study of other areas of mathematics, such as number theory, combinatorics and probability. Additionally, these areas have applications in many areas, including particle physics and quantum science. NCCU faculty are involved in research concerning noncommutative algebra, quantum groups, and approximation theory.

Applied, computational and engineering mathematics researchers blend computer science and mathematics to solve complex scientific and engineering problems. This work includes modeling, analysis, algorithm development and simulation. Active research areas incorporate numerical analysis, differential equations, scientific computing, and optimization.

Data science combines mathematics, statistics, computer science and domain knowledge to improve decision-making and strategic planning. NCCU faculty address social inequities using data-driven methods including fairness in machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms. Also, faculty develop flexible statistical models and provide expertise to solve problems in biology, medicine, and engineering.

NCCU mathematics faculty play an active role in the UNC System Math Pathways initiatives to improve student outcomes in gateway mathematics courses. Leadership is also provided to develop future secondary education teachers.
