Our state-of-the-art facilities provide an inspiring and well-equipped space for students’ artistic investigations. They experience the perfect blend of traditional and digital art practices, explore diverse mediums, and immerse themselves in a vibrant artistic community. Students discover their creative potential and thrive in an environment that nurtures their artistic vision in the NCCU Department of Art and Design.
Our program boasts dedicated classrooms and studios that provide the ideal setting for artistic exploration. These spaces are carefully designed to meet the specific needs of various disciplines, including drawing, painting, and design. We also provide specialized studios equipped with gas kilns, etching and screen-printing presses, pottery wheels, and sculpting tools and equipment that enable students to engage in a range of hands-on artistic practices.
To facilitate interactive and technology-enhanced learning experiences, we have incorporated three smart classrooms into our facilities. These classrooms are equipped with advanced audiovisual systems and multimedia capabilities; in addition, four large interactive touchscreen displays are in use in the art studios and the hybrid teaching lab to ensure an engaging and immersive learning environment for our students.
Our department recognizes the importance of digital tools in contemporary art and design practices. That’s why we offer four computer labs equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Two of these labs feature Apple iMac computers, while the other two labs utilize the Dell PC platform. Our labs are well-equipped with an array of digital tools and peripherals to support students in their digital art and design endeavors.
Within our facilities, we proudly host a student art gallery where students can showcase their creative achievements. This gallery serves as a platform for students to exhibit their artwork and gain valuable experience in presenting their work to the public.
Adjacent to the Department of Art and Design is the North Carolina Central University Art Museum. The Museum’s permanent collection focuses on African American art, aligning with our university’s identity as a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). The collection also includes works of African art, reflecting the diverse range of styles, techniques, media, and subject matter that enrich our art history courses. The Museum’s annual schedule of activities encompasses rotating regional and national exhibitions, retrospectives of various artists and designers, and faculty and student art exhibitions.
