Ms. Lisa Martinez
Lisa F. Martinez was appointed by the UNC Board of Governors to serve a full four-year term extending through June 30, 2027.
Ms. Martinez has worked at the Capital Group Companies in Los Angeles for the past 26 years. Capital Group is the largest active investment manager in the world, with US$2.2 trillion of assets under management. Currently, Ms. Martinez is co-head of the Global Market Consulting and Counterparty Risk team focusing on emerging markets.
Ms. Martinez learned the importance of a great education from her mother, who was a teacher for over 45 years. Her mother instilled in her a belief that education creates opportunities as well as has the ability to transform lives. Her mother was also a firm believer of living a life of service, and thus, throughout Ms. Martinez’s life, she has supported the growth and development of young women and men through volunteering, mentoring and fundraising. She is passionate about creating equal opportunities for both women and men of color and empowering them to be future leaders. Ms. Martinez belief is, “Our society can only be strengthened by intentional increased diversity among those in positions of power and welcome the challenge.”
Ms. Martinez earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. She currently serves as the board chair of Taking the Reins, a non-profit charity serving low-income and underserved young women in Los Angeles. Previously, her roles at Taking the Reins included treasurer and vice chair. She is also involved with Christo Rey and Verbum Dei. Ms. Martinez mentors Christo Rey students, helping them navigate the workplace and discuss career aspirations and how to achieve their goals. Through Verbum Dei’s corporate work-study program, Ms. Martinez mentored a student throughout his high school career and assisted him in getting an internship at Capital. One of her most proud moments was helping her mentee secure a full-time role at Capital Group after graduating college.
Ms. Martinez resides in Encino, California, and is in the process of relocating to Raleigh, NC. She states, “I am surrounded by a menagerie of pets and one horse that forgives all my mistakes and takes good care of me in the show ring."
