Cybersecurity Criminal Types

Social Engineer: Social engineers manipulate individuals into divulging confidential information or performing actions that compromise security, often through impersonation or persuasion.

Spear Phisher: Spear phishers send targeted, customized phishing emails to specific individuals or groups, often impersonating trusted contacts or organizations to request sensitive information.

Identity Thief: Identity thieves steal personal information to commit fraud, access resources or engage in malicious activities.

Ransomware Attacker: Ransomware attackers encrypt data and demand payment for its release, often targeting organizations, including universities.

Insider Threat: Insider threats are individuals within an organization who misuse their access to systems or information for malicious purposes.

On average, hackers attack 26,000 times a day, or every three seconds. (Forbes)

Please remain vigilant, protect your personal information and report any suspicious activities to IT support. We can create a more secure digital environment for our university community.

As we observe Cyber Security Awareness Month (CSAM), we want to remind you of the importance of staying vigilant about cybersecurity threats that can impact our university community. Protecting our personal information, research data, and institutional resources is a shared responsibility, and we encourage everyone to play an active role in safeguarding our digital assets.

NCCU's Information Technology Security is honored to be a champion and sponsor of Cyber Security Awareness Month (CSAM). This annual initiative, backed by the Department of Homeland Security and National Cyber Security Alliance, provides individuals with the resources to enhance their online safety and security.

Celebrating its 20th year, Cyber Security Awareness Month has chosen the following theme for 2023: "See Yourself in Cyber." Whether you're an individual or a consumer, taking basic steps to safeguard your online information and privacy is essential.

NCSAM aims to equip every American with the tools to proactively enhance their cybersecurity at home and in the workplace, strengthening the nation's resilience against cyber threats. To support this effort, NCCU's cyber champions have developed a CSAM calendar of events to share resources and ensure online safety for all.

Throughout October, NCCU will explore various cybersecurity topics each week:

• Week 1: Use strong passwords and a password manager
• Week 2: Turn on multifactor authentication
• Week 3: Recognizing and reporting phishing
• Week 4: Update software
