Environmental Health and Safety Scope of Service

•  Provide oversight of activities involving biohazardous and infectious agents
• Conduct risk assessments to determine proper mitigation measures and controls
• Consult and train on aspects of biological safety, biosafety cabinets, and packaging and shipping of biohazardous agents
• Oversee biohazardous waste management and disposal program
• Participate in laboratory safety inspections

• Provide surveillance of activities involving chemical and toxicological substances 
• Mitigate and control personnel exposures to chemical hazards
• Provide consultative services and training to laboratory personnel on proper handling and storage of hazardous chemicals, laboratory chemical hoods, engineering controls, safety equipment and personal protective clothing
• Manage chemical waste disposal program
• Participate in laboratory safety inspections

• Enforce North Carolina building and fire codes
• Investigating fire near misses and incidents
• Develop and train individuals on evacuation procedures
• Maintain alarm and extinguishing systems

• Ensure indoor campus environments are conducive to good health and wellbeing by recognizing, evaluating and controlling environmental health and safety hazards
• Work with Facilities personnel to find ways to keep historical buildings functional while protecting employee health
• Planning, construction and startup of new and renovated buildings to anticipate and eliminate building-related health issues

• Provide ergonomic assessments and suggestions
• Administer the Respiratory Protection Program, including fit-testing services and documentation
• Provide general safety training
• Administer Confined Space, Lock Out Tag Out, Forklift, and other safety plans and training for campus partners
