Welcome to the North Carolina Central University School of Business Accounting Department! In an information age and a globalized economy, the most valuable resource is information: information that is relevant, reliable and useful for investors, lenders and other stakeholders in making informed decisions. Accounting is the language of business, providing critical, far-reaching information about a firm’s income, financial position, cash flows and relative position within the industry.

NCCU accounting graduates are among the best, as evidenced by their success in professional certifications such as the Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.) certification and the Certified Management Accountant (C.M.A.) certification. Many of our accounting graduates have gone on to pursue post-graduate studies such as law, Master of Accountancy (MAcc) and Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degrees. NCCU accounting graduates have also been placed in firms such as IBM, CISCO, Sysco, Caterpillar, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young.

Members of the Accounting faculty at NCCU are also known regionally for their research and teaching. NCCU accounting faculty members have published in nationally recognized journals such as The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, Strategic Management Journal, Accounting Organizations and Society and the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy. We at NCCU take special pride in teaching. Class sizes are small, with an average student-teacher ratio of about 15:1. Teaching is personal, and faculty members know most of our students by name.

NCCU is also very active in professional organizations, especially the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA) and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). Our students attend the annual NABA conference for internships, scholarships and job placements.

The Accounting B.B.A. introduces students to accounting theory and concepts, the preparation and interpretation of financial statements and the techniques of financial analysis, as well federal income tax theory as it pertains to individuals and corporations.

The Isaiah Tidwell Accounting Program will usher in the next generation of talented accountants to help grow and sustain the financial health of businesses around the world. This accounting degree will ensure students are well prepared to be immediate contributors to the accounting industry upon graduation. With the expansion of resources to support market-relevant instruction, and scholarships to support student engagement, the Isaiah Tidwell Accounting program at NCCU is well positioned to ensure students are ready to succeed in their accounting careers.

Isaiah Tidwell was a native of Charlotte, North Carolina. After graduating from West Charlotte High School in 1963 he attended what was then North Carolina College at Durham (later named North Carolina Central University). With a degree in commerce, Tidwell graduated in 1967 and later got an M.B.A. from the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University. Isaiah Tidwell went on to be an executive vice president and director of wealth management for Wachovia Bank in Georgia and was then named president of Georgia Banking in 1999.

As a nonprofit membership association, the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc., (NABA, Inc.) is dedicated to bridging the opportunity gap for black accounting and finance professionals by providing leadership and technical training, as well as networking and career opportunities. This group wanted to establish an organization to address the concerns of minorities entering the accounting profession and to make a commitment to professional and academic excellence. The nine individuals who initially met were determined to "make a difference" and let their voices be heard.

NABA, Inc. is an American nonprofit professional association that represents the interests of more than 200,000 black professionals in furthering their educational and professional goals in accounting, finance and related business professions. Student members are served throughout the organization's 200 chapters around the country.
