John Edward Stephenson, a native of Fayetteville, NC, proudly graduated from E.E. Smith High School before attending North Carolina Central University as a chancellor's scholarship recipient and University Honors Program direct admit. He actively participated in various organizations, including the men's tennis team, Royal Court, Student Government Association, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Phi Beta Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated, Rho Phi Lambda and the Golden Key International Honor Society. In 2009, he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in recreation administration, specializing in recreational sports management.
Stephenson then enrolled in the Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration joint degree program at NCCU, becoming a three-time alumnus in 2013. During his graduate studies, he remained engaged on campus as a member of the Graduate Student Association, the Sports and Entertainment Law Society, Phi Alpha Delta and the Black Law Students Association.
Currently, Stephenson is a licensed attorney, serving as the senior associate athletic director for compliance at Florida Atlantic University. He oversees all levels of compliance, is a member of the director of athletics’ executive leadership team and senior leadership team and plays an integral role in athletic department affairs. Additionally, he serves as vice president of the Florida chapter of the NCCU Alumni Association.
