East Carolina University
D. Cole Phelps credits his law degree from NCCU School of Law for his career success. He says the skills he learned at NCCU provided him with the skills and training he needed to open his own law firm in his hometown of Creswell, NC, allowing him to provide services for individuals who otherwise would not have access to legal advice. As founder and owner of The Law Office of D. Cole Phelps, PLLC, he employs a staff of five and manages a caseload of hundreds of clients throughout northeastern North Carolina.
Phelps also teaches family law and public policy at his undergraduate alma mater, East Carolina University, which allows him to inspire, challenge, motivate and lead the next generation of leaders. Additionally, he provides legal advice to the mayor, members of the Town Council and the town manager of Plymouth, NC, and is on the Board of Trustees at Beaufort County Community College.
During his second year in law school, Phelps successfully won a seat on the Washington County, NC Board of County Commissioners, becoming the youngest county commissioner in North Carolina history. He is now in his second term on the commission.
To date, Attorney Phelps has provided 54 scholarships totaling $49,000 to students attending two- to four-year colleges through the D. Cole Phelps Scholarship Foundation, Inc.
