Anthony M. Donaldson, Jr., Ph.D., assistant professor of history at the University of the South (Sewanee), researches the intersectionality of race, class, and identity as it relates to American popular culture and politics. His courses cover topics from the Black Power Movement to Black Lives Matter. Dr. Donaldson has been featured on CNN’s Paula Zahn Show, ABC 11, UNC-TV, NPR, and other media outlets.
Currently, Dr. Donaldson is working on a book manuscript entitled “Waiting is Not an Option: The Quest for Black Political Power in North Carolina, 1963-1981,” which examines the strong, complex interplay of race and politics in America. Dr. Donaldson’s academic work supports his longtime commitment to community activism.
As a community organizer, Dr. Donaldson founded the Obama Squad, registered thousands of voters, and led Barack Obama’s 2008 victory in North Carolina. He is the Director and Founder of TENSE (Teaching to Eliminate Negative Stereotypes in Education) Summit, a scholarship youth program for low-income communities. After graduating from North Carolina Central University with a B.A. (cum laude) and an M.A., Dr. Donaldson studied political economy at Georgetown University and Hong Kong University and earned a Ph.D. in History from the University of Florida.
