North Carolina Central University requires all admitted students to complete Level II of a modern foreign language. Students are required to complete the Modern Foreign Language placement test for Spanish (SPAN), French (FREN), or German (GERM). FREN 1192, GERM 1192, and SPAN 1192 satisfy the foreign language requirement of the General Education Curriculum (GEC).
How to Complete the Modern Foreign Language Placement Exam
Students can complete the placement test by going to Foreign Language Placement Exam and creating an account; then, select the language you intend to pursue. You will be able to see your test score at the end of the exam outlining your level of placement. The placement test is free of cost to all NCCU students.
Note: The exam is crucial for course registration, so please complete your placement test prior to attending New Student Orientation.
Understanding Your Placement Test Scores
Students will be placed into their level of foreign language based upon their exam scores. Students who take multiple foreign language exams should notify their academic advisor which foreign language they plan to pursue.

Who Is Exempt from the Modern Foreign Language Placement Exam?
Students with college transfer credit, second degree-seeking students, prior credit in the language at NCCU from years past, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or CLEP credit from another institution have already established a college language placement and are not required to take the placement test.
International students or students who are proficient in another language can complete a proficiency test by contacting the department chair of Language and Literature Department to schedule a private test or consider taking a CLEP examination. Contact the Advising Office for more details.
