We welcome you to the Department of Mathematics and Physics!
Did you know that jobs for mathematicians and statisticians will increase 30% over the next 10 years? Jobs for physics and astronomy majors will increase 5% over the next 10 years. (This is reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.) In our department, we will prepare you for employment either after the bachelor’s degree or the master’s degree in a friendly environment that is welcoming to all students, independent of race, religion, or gender identity. Our students go on to find fulfilling jobs after the bachelor's degree program, while others go on to graduate degree programs. Our graduate students earn a dissertation-oriented Master of Science degree and go on to doctoral programs or find well-paying jobs in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) workforce.
An overwhelming majority of the students in our department are financially supported in some way by our department. Many students are paid to do research work, while some students are tutors in our department assistance center. Graduate students may start out as paid teaching assistants and later are supported by grants to perform the research of their master's project.
In the department, all students can participate in paid internships and research projects for course credit in mathematics, statistics, physics, and engineering. Here you can learn about quantum information science and data science among other topics that are at the leading edge of mathematical and physical science. Check out our Research pages to find details of the exciting work that we are doing and that you can join.
