NCCU Retains Top Rankings for Awarding Degrees

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) was ranked as one of the nation’s Top 100 Minority Degree Producers for 2020 in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine’s annual awards listing.

NCCU was ranked No. 1 among schools awarding master’s degrees to African American students in the field of communication disorders and ranked No. 27 nationally in the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to African American students across all disciplines.

NCCU also was among the top 10 degree-granting institutions for bachelor’s degrees to African Americans in the fields of family and consumer sciences/human science; history; homeland security; and law enforcement.

Other top-20 mentions came in fields including law, public administration, family and consumer sciences, physical sciences, library science, history, parks and recreation, social sciences and hospitality administration.

“North Carolina Central University emphasizes delivering quality education to students, and these rankings are indicative of our efforts,” said Yolanda Anderson, Ph.D., interim provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “These rankings are a testament to the commitment of NCCU’s faculty and staff to provide all students with academic excellence.”

NCCU was among the top-50 institutions for degrees conferred to African Americans in a variety of other subjects. These Diverse Issues Rankings 2020included psychology; public health; homeland security and law enforcement; allied professions; natural resources and conservation; computer and information sciences; mass communication; business administration; visual and performing arts; physical sciences; biological and biomedical sciences; and public administration.

The university also was a top-10 degree-granting institution for the number of master’s degrees in family and consumer sciences/human sciences awarded to minorities, including African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanics. NCCU ranked among the top 50 universities for bachelor’s degrees awarded to minorities in the field of family and consumer science/human science, homeland security and law enforcement. For parks and recreation, hospitality administration and public health degrees the university was mentioned in the top 100.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education’s annual list of institutions is based on the most recent data available from the U.S. Department of Education. The goal is to identify campuses around the country that confer the greatest number of degrees to minority students each year.
