NCCU Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic

For more than 45 years, the NCCU Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic has provided comprehensive assessment and treatment services for children and adults in the Durham community and surrounding areas.

Our clinic offers free individual and group services to people of all ages. Our talented graduate students in the Department of Communication Disorders provide service provisions under the direct supervision of an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) clinically certified and North Carolina licensed speech-language pathologist or audiologist.

Clinic Intake Form

We are dedicated to providing comprehensive and evidence-based diagnostic and treatment services. Diagnostic tests are administered at the start of any intervention or rehabilitative service. We treat individuals with a wide range of developmental, acquired and degenerative disorders that affect speech, language, hearing, voice and cognition. Clients work with a therapeutic team to develop goals that meet their specific needs.

We commonly treat people who have:

• Autism spectrum disorder
• Dementia
• Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
• Traumatic brain injury
• Right hemisphere brain damage
• Aphasia
• Transgender voice affirmation needs

Treatments may focus on maximizing functional capabilities for:

• Articulation
• Receptive and expressive language
• Cognition (attention, memory and executive functioning)
• Hearing
• Speech and language development
• Social communication
• Stuttering
• Voice
• Accent expansion preferences
• Alternative and augmented communication (AAC)
