As North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) chief executive officer, the chancellor shapes the vision and strategic plan for the university.

Dr. Johnson O. Akinleye was appointed as the 12th chancellor of NCCU on June 26, 2017. Under his leadership, NCCU has expanded significantly, building a campus for the future to accommodate the increasing enrollment of over 8,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students, both on campus and online. Collaborating with his leadership philosophy of fostering academic excellence, research advancement and community engagement, Dr. Akinleye enhances NCCU’s mission to “prepare students to become global leaders and practitioners who transform communities.”

Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye, 12th chancellor of North Carolina Central University (NCCU), has announced his retirement, effective at the end of the 2023–2024 academic year on June 30, 2024. A national search has been initiated to identify NCCU’s next chancellor.
