Fixed Period of Admission Rule Temporarily Blocked

On September 14, 2026, a federal district court issued a nationwide preliminary injunction temporarily blocking the DHS Fixed Period of Admission Final Rule, which was scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026.

As a result, the rule did not take effect, and the existing Duration of Status (D/S) framework remains in place for F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors.

The litigation is ongoing, and the rule’s status could change based on future court action. The Office of International Affairs will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as additional information becomes available.

Prospective Students

If you are a prospective international student and have questions concerning undergraduate or graduate admissions, please contact Undergraduate Admissions or Graduate Admissions. The deadlines for international students requiring an I-20 to study are March 1 (Fall grad), April 1 (Fall undergrad), and September 1 (Spring).
