Transfer Credits and Policies

All work accepted for transfer credit must be at least a “C” grade and will be treated as semester hours earned.  NCCU does not accept transfer credit from challenge examinations or for course work where grades of Pass/Fail (P/F) have been given.  

NCCU accepts all non-remedial credits earned in a degree program at any regionally accredited four-year institution.  As a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System, NCCU also accepts college transfer work completed at any of the 59 NC community colleges under the terms stipulated in the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) between the UNC System and the North Carolina Community College System.  

Students transferring from a two-year institution may receive up to a total of 64 semester hours of academic credit from all institutions attended.  Credit for courses completed in non-college transfer degree programs such as technical degree programs will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis.  No credit is awarded for coursework completed in non-degree programs such as diploma or certificate programs.  Extension courses, advanced placement, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credit and military service credit are included in this maximum.

Students who transfer from a four-year accredited institution must meet the 30-semester hour residency requirement before receiving their degrees from North Carolina Central University. For more information regarding the Transfer of Credit, please visit the NCCU catalog page.

Students who have inquiries about how their transcripts were evaluated or who do not see certain courses listed on the Transfer Evaluation System (TES) may complete and submit a Transcript Evaluation Inquiry Form to the Office of Transfer Services.

Students may take the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) International Baccalaureate (IB) exams to get a jump start on NCCU requirements. Credit earned through IB and CLEP may be used to meet degree requirements. For more information regarding these exams, please visit the NCCU catalog page.

Credits for courses from military service schools and for military service experience are based on recommendations in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services, published by the American Council on Education and commonly referred to as the “ACE Guide.” For additional information regarding credits for military service experience, please visit the NCCU catalog page.

Nursing Majors:  Science and math course credits previously earned at other institutions will not be recorded if credit was earned five or more years prior to the academic term in which you enroll at NCCU. Please be aware that admission to the Nursing program could be delayed if credits have not been earned in required prerequisite courses. For more regarding Admission Requirements to the Nursing Program, please see http://www.nccu.edu/cbss/nursing.

Business Majors:  Only the following business courses are approved for transfer credit: Principles of Accounting I, Principles of Accounting II, Introduction to Macroeconomics, Introduction to Microeconomics, Introduction to Computers, Introduction to Prog & Logic and Intro to Business.

The Reverse Transfer Program is a collaborative effort between North Carolina’s Community Colleges and the University of North Carolina System’s 16 constituent universities.

Students who transfer to North Carolina Central University (NCCU) from one of the 58 North Carolina community colleges are given the opportunity to combine the credits earned at NCCU with credit already earned at the community college to determine if the associate degree requirements have been met.    

Procedure for Qualified Students (must have taken a minimum of 16 credit hours at the community college to qualify):

1. Log into Banner SSB via myEOL.
2. You will receive a pop-up notification requesting participation.
3. By virtue of “opt in," you sign an agreement stating that you will follow NCCU’s curriculum towards the baccalaureate degree and that you understand that academic advisors at NCCU cannot provide advising for community college coursework.
4. Once you “opt in," no further action from you is required.

Note: North Carolina Central University will send your records to the appropriate community college once you earn 60 total credit hours. The community college will evaluate your credits from NCCU and inform you if you have earned an associate degree. 

If a student is awarded the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Fine Arts or Associate of Engineering degree through the Reverse Transfer program, NCCU will honor the degree to satisfy lower-division General Education requirements. All students, regardless of transfer status, will still have to satisfy the health, physical education and foreign language requirements.

Please note that your advisor can only advise you on North Carolina Central University degree requirements. It is your responsibility to understand your community college requirements for completing an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Fine Arts or Associate of Engineering degree.
