The School of Education (SOE) has a strong legacy of success. This legacy is evidenced by our graduates who are recognized by their peers, appreciated by those they serve and have risen to high ranks within their chosen career paths.

Programs offered at the School of Education are accredited by organizations including the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the Association for Education and Rehabilitation Accreditation Council (AERAC). Licensure areas are approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).

Marathon Teaching Institute

The Marathon Teaching Institute (MTI) is designed to increase the number of male school teachers and higher administrators from a broader and more diverse background, particularly male African-American teachers.

Eagle Counseling, Consultation and Research Clinic

Located in the School of Education, we provide mental health counseling to individuals who are 13 years of age and older, as well as couples and families. We offer in-person and telehealth services to individuals in Durham County and across North Carolina. Counseling services are grounded in a holistic approach to wellness, cultural awareness and social justice.

About the School of Education

The North Carolina Central University School of Education began in 1925 as a collection of courses intended to train black teachers and principals to work in the racially segregated school system of the Jim Crow South.
