NCCU's museum was envisioned by founder James E. Shepard to build cultural pride through fine arts. Starting in 1942, the museum evolved under various leaders, eventually opening in its current location in 1977. The collection includes notable African-American artists and contemporary works.

Art and Design

The Department of Art and Design's overarching mission is to foster broad inquiry within the visual arts, including engagement with non-Western cultural studies and diverse aesthetic experiences.

Criminal Justice

Train to work in various sectors of the criminal justice system, including law enforcement, corrections, homeland security, and juvenile justice.

History

The Department of History is essential to the core of liberal arts at North Carolina Central University. Our diverse population of faculty and students engage with teaching and learning history through innovative research, exciting courses, student projects, digital humanities, public history, and service learning.

Language and Literature

The Department of Language and Literature engages students with languages, cultures, literature, linguistics, and writing. We foster students’ analytical and creative thinking and teach communication strategies that account for global perspectives to prepare students for civic and professional life.

Mass Communication

As one of the newest departments of its type in the nation, the Department of Mass Communication prepares students for careers and study in mass communication by offering engaged learning, student media and research experiences, and connections to professional practice opportunities.

Music

Alongside traditional music courses, we encourage open-minded debate and a commitment to all types of music. Our alumni go on to become award-winning musicians, industry professionals, and educators. Come join our vibrant and dynamic community of talented and innovative students and faculty!

Political Science

Develop a scientific understanding of government and politics through concentrations that include global politics, civic engagement and public policy, and political theory and law.

Psychology

Gain a comprehensive understanding of prominent scientific theories, as well as the concepts and procedures of modern psychology, and be prepared for a career in the social services field or additional graduate training.

Public Administration

Theatre and Dance

The Department of Theatre is designed to satisfy the needs of a broad range of enthusiastic students. With a wide exposure to humankind's accomplishments in theatre and experiences that will develop them as capable theatre practitioners, our students are ready for the stage and for the world!

Special Programs in CASH

NCCU Army ROTC

The AROTC Bull City Battalion, a joint program of Duke University and North Carolina Central University, equips students with leadership skills and confidence through rigorous training, preparing them for success in a competitive environment.

NCCU Air Force ROTC

North Carolina Central University's AFROTC Detachment 585 serves as the Department of Aerospace Studies. Students gain the opportunity to earn a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force upon graduation, positioning them for purposeful leadership.

Behavioral and Social Sciences, B.S

The Bachelor of Science in Behavioral and Social Sciences, part of the End Zone Initiative, offers credit for prior coursework from NCCU, other accredited institutions, and military experience.

The Endzone Initiative

The UNC system estimates that nearly 1.5 million North Carolinians have some college credits but have not earned their degree. If you have not completed your degree, North Carolina Central University wants you to know that we offer two interdisciplinary degree programs aimed at helping you to succeed.

Undergraduate Degrees

Degree programs in the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities offer undergraduate students opportunities to explore and become credentialed in areas ranging from public relations to global security.  Online and in-class programs provide students with expert instruction, experiential learning, research and civic engagement opportunities, and internships and professional development. All appropriate programs are fully accredited.

Graduate Degrees

The College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities offers master's degrees in History, Psychology, Social Work, English, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, and Jazz Studies. Within these areas, students may concentrate in areas related to public health policy, clinical psychology, public history, and urban and regional planning.  Students also have an opportunity to complete joint programs with the School of Law.

Juvenile Justice Institute

The Juvenile Justice Institute promotes the exchange of information and human resource development to help facilitate prevention of juvenile crime and delinquency.

One of the newest minors on campus, Women's & Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary program that explores the intersections of gender, race, class, religion, sexuality, and other identities with social structures of inequality on the lives of women.
