NCCU’s Academic Community Service Learning Program (ACSLP) is a bridge between the University, its students and the community. ACSLP is a “civics lesson.” Students, faculty and staff “give back” to the community through service. The Program guides students in two directions to comply with the requirement - community service and academic service learning. Students perform community service when they participate with an approved service agency in an activity designed to enhance the quality of the life for the community.
Good citizenship starts at home, at NCCU, and students carry the message to schools, classrooms, and neighborhoods. Some students tutor school children, some promote dialogue between racially disparate groups and still others help clean up and instill pride in residents living in blighted areas.
It is estimated that students partnered with community agencies and the Criminal Justice and Social Work fields—contributed nearly 155,000 hours of service in 2004-2005. What were those hours worth? In philanthropic terms, the value of the service comes to an estimated $2.7 million.
